So much pain hidden in so much beauty. We hear that a young woman from Florida recently drove all the way to Taos to commit suicide by jumping off our beautiful bridge. Why? There is no beautiful end here. Only pain in a beautiful place.
The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge near picturesque Taos is the state’s most famous span, and has appeared in movies and attracted tourists from around the world, but the steel deck arch bridge sitting 650 feet above the Rio Grande has also been the site of more than 125 suicides in 20 years. As a state, we grapple with this sobering statistic. Again, why?
